from Maschienengewehr-Bataillon 10. This was the last unit to push into Cholm when the town was encircled. By the time this photo was taken, this unit was equipped with captured russian 120mm mortars, changing its name to Granatewerfer-Bataillon 10.

Panthers of Grossdeutschland - 1944

From an album of Oberst Schmidt, Pz.Rgt.11. In 1944 I/Pz.Rgt.GD was fighting in Pz.Rgt.11. Here's the panthers of the batallion.

General Theodor Busse - 1944

From an album of a Stabsoffizier of 281.Infanterie-Division. Here the Generalleutnant (as commanding officer of I.Armeekorps) walks together with Generalmajor Ortner, divisional commander. As an avid reader of The Last 100 Days, the name Busse has kind of miraculous effect on me!

Bicycles in the Wehrmacht - 1944

The Wehrmacht used extensive number of bicycles in their formations. Radfahr-Bataillons were schnell batallion with bicycles. Aside from that, bicycles were used in large numbers. Here is a rare bicycle with a Truppenkennzeichen of 6.Panzer-Division. This photo came from the album of a DKiG recipient, Major Hauschild.

Major Grimminger and his comrades - 1945

Major Johannes Grimminger, an infantry Eichenlaubträger, fought in 25.Panzergrenadier-division and later as a commander of 192. Panzergrenadir-regiment, 21. Panzer-Division. In this picture, Major Grimminger is on the right with his Ritterkreuz. The other Ritterkreuzträger is Hauptmann Martin Lenz, commander of II.Bataillon. According to Mr. Kitamura, this picture was probably taken March 1945, just before he was awarded with an Eichenlaub.
More pictures from the album: a nice portrait, and at a conference.

Alles kaputt! - 1945

Here is a late Panzer IV with three return rollersseen on May 8th, 1945.

In Czech, the Wehrmacht troops dropped their weapons and try to reach home. Up on the castle keep the national flag of the liberated Czech declares the end of the Third Reich. The traffic is jammed, but the faces on german soldiers show some hope.
I had never thought to get color images taken by german side at this time, but the rule "seek, then it will be found!" is again proved [photos updated with better color correction, courtesy Mr.Garcia - thank you 2005/11/12]
